What Makes a Great Teacher?

“What Makes a Great Teacher?” 🤔

Qualifications, experience and subject knowledge are all important. But at Inkwell Academy, we think what truly makes a great teacher isn't how much they know- it's their ability to recognise that every child learns differently, and to adapt their teaching to meet each student's individual needs.

Example:

Imagine two students who both struggle with writing. One student has a limited vocabulary. The other knows plenty of words but struggles to organise their ideas into a clear paragraph.

If the teacher simply tells both students to memorise more vocabulary and write more essays, neither of them will make meaningful progress. Because the real problem has never been identified.

A good teacher is constantly observing.

🔍 Where is the student getting stuck?

🧠 How are they thinking through the problem?

❓ Why are they making this mistake?

Most importantly- they personalise their teaching.

Every child has a different personality, learning pace and way of thinking. Some students need step-by-step guidance to build confidence. Some need greater challenges to unlock their potential. Some learn best through discussion. Others benefit from having a clear structure and framework.

A great teacher doesn't expect every child to learn in the same way.

Instead, they adapt their teaching to suit each student's strengths, needs and learning style, helping every child discover the approach that works best for them.

We've always believed:

⭐️ Education isn't about filling children with knowledge. It's about helping them discover how they learn best. ⭐️

That's why in Inkwell Academy’s classrooms, we want students to:

📚 Understand, rather than memorise.

🧠 Think, rather than copy.

✍️ Learn strategies, rather than simply complete worksheets.

Because the goal has never been to score full marks on today's test. The real goal is to help students become independent, confident learners who can tackle new challenges long after they leave the classroom.

🌱 A truly great teacher doesn't just teach knowledge. They teach students how to learn, how to think, and how to believe in themselves. Every child is unique, and their education should be too.
